How long should an ebook be?
Ebook length depends on purpose. See word ranges for lead magnets, guides, and business books, plus a chapter-count plan for 6 and 12 chapters.
An ebook is a book-length digital file read on a phone, tablet, e-reader, or computer, and its length is measured in words or pages. The right length is the one that delivers the promise on the cover. Lead magnets run about 5,000 to 20,000 words. Business books run 30,000 to 70,000.
Ebook length depends on what the book is for
Short ebooks and lead magnets sit around 5,000 to 20,000 words. Business and self-help books run 30,000 to 70,000 words. General nonfiction runs 40,000 to 80,000 words, and general fiction 70,000 to 100,000 words.
Sources vary on where each size starts and stops, so treat these as ranges, not rules.
What length means for different formats
Some guides split ebooks into three sizes. Very short ones run from a few pages to about 5,000 words. Mid-sized ones run 5,000 to 20,000 words. Long ones go past 20,000 words and take three or more sittings to read.
Average word counts by genre run between 35,000 and 95,000 words.
Minimums on Amazon KDP and in stores
KDP has no strict minimum word count for ebooks. It doesn't record word count at all. It works in printed page count and, for Kindle Unlimited, in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages.
Practical limits exist anyway. Books under roughly 10,000 words can get flagged or poorly received in some categories. A very short book also gives a small Look Inside preview, which gives buyers less to judge.
Length should match what readers expect from the book. Open the app to see what your book needs.
Plan length by chapter count
Work backward from chapters. A chapter of 2,000 to 3,500 words is a common range for Kindle. Business books average 4,000 to 4,500 words per chapter.
Here are two sample shapes:
- A 6-chapter lead magnet is a compact shape that suits the short ebook range of 5,000 to 20,000 words.
- A 12-chapter how-to guide has room to cover a full task in more depth.
A longer business-style book needs more chapters, or longer ones, to reach 30,000 words and up.
Chapter length has little link to perceived value. Quality and pacing matter more than word count.
Set length in EBookBrew before you write
In EBookBrew you approve the outline before any chapter is written, so you set the chapter count first. A 6-chapter lead magnet and a 12-chapter guide are both common starting shapes.
You can edit each chapter and redo any one that runs short or long. Chapters are written with earlier ones in view, so the book reads coherently.
Each chapter also lists the claims the model couldn't verify, such as figures, studies, quotes, dates, and rules. Check them against real sources before you publish. Our guide to fact-checking an AI-written ebook walks through that step, and it matters more as a book gets longer.
Quick way to choose your length
- Start with the job the book does. A lead magnet should be quick to finish. A how-to guide should cover the full task. A book you sell for more should feel complete for its price.
- Pick a chapter count that covers each step or idea once. Cut filler, and add chapters only when a topic needs room.
- Check the ebook against the stores where you plan to sell, since preview size and price expectations shape how readers judge length.
