How to edit an AI-written ebook so it sounds like you
A step-by-step routine for editing an AI-written ebook in EBookBrew: shape the outline, read each chapter, redo with guidance, edit by hand, check facts, and do a final read.
Edit an AI-written ebook in stages. Approve the outline first, read each chapter against your own voice, redo weak chapters with guidance, make manual edits, then check facts and read the whole book once more. In EBookBrew, you control each stage.
What you need before you start
Gather a few things first. They make every later step faster.
- A book idea or rough notes, and a few samples of how you write or talk, such as an email or a post you like.
- A short list of your own words, stories, and examples you want in the book.
- A place to log claims you need to check, such as a simple note or spreadsheet.
Why a tone read-through isn't enough
AI tools can produce content that sounds confident and persuasive but is completely wrong. Voice editing and fact checking are two separate jobs, and a read for tone won't catch a bad figure.
Poor AI writing often has a recognizable cadence and pattern. That's what you listen for in the voice pass.
Never publish AI-generated content without checking it first, or without a trained proofreader or editor doing it for you.
Step 1: Shape the outline before anything is written
The outline is the cheapest place to fix voice, because every chapter follows the plan you approve.
- Rename chapters and reorder them.
- Rewrite summaries so they match how you'd teach or explain the topic.
- Add notes on tone or examples to include.
Nothing gets written until the plan looks right to you.
Step 2: Read one chapter at a time, out loud
Review each chapter on its own. Don't skim for typos. Ask whether the chapter works and whether it sounds like you.
As you read, mark two kinds of spots:
- Lines that don't sound like you: stock phrases, repeated sentence rhythms, advice you'd never give.
- Places where your own story or example belongs.
Step 3: Redo chapters that miss, with guidance
You can edit or redo any chapter. When you redo one, tell the tool what to change. Ask for a plainer tone, or name a specific example from your work.
Use redo for chapters that are off in structure or tone. Use manual edits for smaller fixes.
Step 4: Edit by hand to add your voice
Start with the opening and ending of each chapter. Rewrite them in your own words first.
Then work through the body:
- Swap generic examples for your real ones.
- Shorten long sentences.
- Cut phrases you wouldn't say.
You can edit or redo any chapter at any stage.
Step 5: Check facts and neighboring chapters
Check every figure, study, quote, date, and rule against a real source. Start with the claims that carry the most risk if they are wrong. Each chapter lists the claims the model couldn't verify, so you know where to look. Add each one to your log.
If you can't find a source for a claim, cut it. You can also rewrite it as a general statement you can support.
Automated fact checkers can give you leads. None is accurate all of the time, so treat their output as a pointer, not a verdict. For a fuller method, read how to fact-check an AI-written ebook.
Chapters are written with earlier ones in view. After a change, skim the neighboring chapters for statements that repeat the old fact.
Step 6: Do a final read from start to finish
Confirm that every claim in your log has a decision and every chapter's claims are resolved. Then read the book start to finish once more, listening for a steady voice from one chapter to the next.
